Read images in context
The idea
An image can be authentic but used with a misleading caption or date. Evaluate origin, location, timing, cropping, and the claim made about it. Visual evidence should be considered alongside other information rather than treated as a complete account.
Worked example
A photograph of a flooded street from several years ago may be mislabeled as a current event. The photograph itself can be real while the accompanying claim is false.
Another application
Cropping a photograph can remove surrounding people or signs that change its interpretation. Compare the full image and original caption before concluding what the scene establishes.
A common misunderstanding
Image authenticity and claim accuracy are different questions. A real image can fail to support the story told about it.
Try it yourself
Compare a photograph’s caption with the page that originally published it. Note date, place, and what is visible versus assumed.
